Saudi Arabia is the focus of about 40 percent of the cyber attacks taking place across the Middle East, said an IT official, warning computer users to equip their PCs with Internet security software. “Merely running anti-virus software will not protect PCs or servers from hackers,” said Arshad Sheikh, Country Manager, Trend Micro KSA. Internet-banking and online transactions are becoming increasingly popular in Saudi Arabia, he said. Hackers send e-mails in the name of big companies or banks, asking for personal details, said Sheikh, warning online users against providing personal details. “It will be too late by the time the user realizes his/her mistake,” he said. Earlier cyber criminals wanted to test their computer skills, but now they are more focused on reaping financial benefits through hacking, he said.
