It took 12 Civil Defense firefighting teams to get a fire at a central warehouse area under control in southern Jeddah Thursday. Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining warehouses by using large quantities of water. The teams restricted the fire to warehouses, containing sponge, on an area of 3,200 square meters belonging to a Turkish investor. The Civil Defense had the help of various rescue teams with retractable ladders. The fire gutted three out of five warehouses. Brig. Gen. Abdullah Al-Jiddawi, Director of the Civil Defense in Jeddah, who commanded the firefighting efforts, said: “The teams managed to contain the fire even though it was quite fierce. The causes have not yet been determined.” Capt. Abdullah Al-Amri, spokesman for the Directorate of Civil Defense in the Makkah region, said security agencies rushed to the scene and contributed to maintaining security and facilitating the entry of Civil Defense machinery. He added that the five warehouses were under one roof. He confirmed that there were no deaths or injuries. Investigators have started work to determine what caused the fire and to assess the damage.
