A study of land use in Riyadh has revealed that the capital expanded by approximately 17 percent over a five-year period. The study, conducted by the High Commission for the Development of Riyadh, showed that between the Hijri years of 1425 and 1430 – corresponding approximately to 2004 to 2009 – the city witnessed “rapid building expansion” over 176 sq. km. Most of the expansion, the study showed, occurred in the north and northeast sections of the city.
