DUBAI - The Seventh Dubai City of Gold Conference ended on a high note with the industry looking forward to benefit from gold's re-emergence as a safe haven and an attractive option by the global investor community. Despite the challenges of high prices and changing consumer preferences, industry experts expect a modest recovery in gold Jewelry sales. Hong Kong gold closed on Tuesday at US$1,178.00-1,179.00 an ounce, up from Monday's close of US$1,177.50-1,178.50.It opened at US$1,179.20-1,180.20. At the conclusion of the event held at Almas Tower in the Jumeirah Lakes Towers, the Dubai Gold and Jewelry Group announced that the next edition of the event will be held alongside the 16th Dubai International Jewelry Week (DIJW) on April 23, 2011. Chandu Siroya, vice chairman of Dubai Gold and Jewelry Group, said: “This is a key partnership for all the industry players as it will bring the most influential decision-makers together to help set the direction of the industry in the coming years.” He added: “We have seen today how integral Dubai is to the international gold trade and our strategic partnership with Dubai International Jewelry Week will provide a platform to assess the current state of the industry and explore the dynamic opportunities available.” Ahmed bin Sulayem, executive chairman, DMCC, said: “DMCC were pleased to host the 7th City of Gold Conference at Almas Tower, the tallest office tower in the Middle East and fast emerging as the location of choice for the gold and precious gems industries. The conference brought together over 400 participants from the global jewelry industry for discussions on current and future market trends for the gold industry, which is among Dubai's top five contributors to UAE's non-oil economy.” The city itself accounts for 14 percent of world jewelry sales and DIJW showcases the capabilities of the emirate's vast retail Jewelry sector.
