Chelsea on a scoring spree, shoots to the top
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 27 - 04 - 2010

Chelsea swept aside Stoke City 7-0 to swagger back to the top of the Premier League and leave themselves two wins away from their first title since 2006.
A Salomon Kalou hat trick, two goals for midfielder Frank Lampard and one each for Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda lifted Chelsea to 80 points, one ahead of champion Manchester United, which beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Saturday.
It was a record top-flight win for Chelsea and all the more impressive for coming against a team who, along with United, had shared the league's best away defensive record with just 16 conceded.
The Londoners have scored seven three times this season and now have an eight-superior goal difference to United with two games each remaining.
Earlier Sunday, Burnley lost 4-0 at home to Liverpool to seal its relegation, Aston Villa beat Birmingham City 1-0 to stay in the hunt for fourth place and Everton defeated Fulham 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time Mikel Arteta penalty.
Having been knocked out of its stride by Tottenham Hotspur last week Chelsea was on their game from the first whistle to the last at Stamford Bridge, slicing Stoke apart with wave after wave of incisive attacks.
Kalou stooped low to head the first goal after 24 minutes and he controversially forced in the second after 31, his studs-up, two-footed slide putting the ball into the net and Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen into hospital with a dislocated elbow.
A Lampard penalty made it 3-0 at halftime and, after easing off the pedal after the break, the Londoners surged home with four goals in the last 22 minutes.
Kalou completed his hat trick at the second attempt before Lampard reached 20 league goals for the season with his cleverly-finished second.
Sturridge broke clear for the sixth and Malouda, who had earlier missed from two yards, bundled in the seventh.
Chelsea's last two matches are away to Liverpool and home to Wigan Athletic while United visits Sunderland and host Stoke on May 9, the final day of the league season.
Getafe stuns Sevilla
Daniel Parejo scored an injury-time penalty Sunday for Getafe to twice come from behind and beat Sevilla 4-3 in the Spanish league.
Parejo was tripped by Manuel “Lolo” Ortiz inside the area in the fourth minute of injury time, and the Getafe midfielder converted the spot kick on the second attempt after being asked to take it again.
Sevilla stayed fifth but fell two points behind fourth-place Mallorca, which scored an injury-time equalizer to draw 1-1 with Malaga.
Luis Fabiano scored twice and Frederic Kanoute added another for Sevilla after Adrian Gonzalez had given Getafe a 1-0 lead.
Pedro Leon and Manu Del Moral scored in the second half for Getafe to stay in the hunt for a Europa League spot.
Villarreal kept up its own chase to finish in the last Champions League place with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Racing Santander.
Mallorca has 56 points, Sevilla 54, Villarreal 52 and Getafe 50 with four rounds to play.
Eduardo Salvio scored two goals and Sergio Aguero added the other as Atletico Madrid prepared for Thursday's Europa League semifinal second leg at Liverpool with a 3-1 win over Tenerife.
Elsewhere, Luis Garcia scored a 55th-minute free kick to guide Espanyol to a 1-0 win over Almeria, while relegation-threatened Valladolid picked up an important 2-0 win at Sporting.
Roma loses to Sampdoria
AS Roma heads into the final three rounds of Serie A two points behind Inter Milan after losing its six-month unbeaten league record with a 2-1 defeat to Sampdoria.
Inter beat Atalanta 3-1 Saturday to pile the pressure on Roma, but Claudio Ranieri's team could not hold onto a lead given to it by Francesco Totti's early strike.
Giampaolo Pazzini headed Sampdoria level at the start of the second half before grabbing the winner with five minutes remaining to bring an end to Roma's six-match winning run and move his side into fourth.
Inter is top with 73 points while Roma is seven points clear of third-place AC Milan, which lost 3-1 to Palermo Saturday.
Sampdoria occupies the final Champions League spot on 60 points.
Juventus kept its Champions League hopes alive with a 3-0 win over Bari, courtesy of two goals from Vincenzo Iaquinta and a penalty by Alessandro Del Piero. Juventus is now six points behind Sampdoria.
Napoli fell behind Juventus following its 0-0 draw at home to Cagliari.
Also Sunday, it was; Bologna 2, Parma 1; Fiorentina 0, Chievo Verona 2; Genoa 1, Lazio 2; Livorno 3, Catania 1; Udinese 4, Siena 1.
