Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a woman named Thenmuli Rajaratnam, a suicide bomber also known as Gayatri and Dhanu, in the village of Sriperumbudur, about 50 kilometers from Madras, Tamil Nadu. The former Prime Minister, along with many others, was killed in the explosion. The Rajiv Gandhi Memorial was built at the site recently and is one of the major tourist attractions to the small industrial town. __
