Some 1,000 volunteers are expected to take part in the seven-day national environment awareness campaign starting here Sunday to observe Met and Earth Day 2010. The Saudi Environment Society will participate in the events to be organized by the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) at the Hilton here. The occasion which will be patronized by Prince Turki Bin Nasser Bin Abdul Aziz, President of PME, will be attended by a number of officials, academicians and people having an interest in the environment. Prince Nawaf Bin Nasser Bin Abdul Aziz, head of the Saudi Environment Society, pointed out that Met and Earth Day is an important occasion worldwide. “Our society has prepared an environment preservation program titled (I'm Earth, Express your Love to Earth, Keep it Clean). The program can help us spread preservation awareness among people,” Prince Nawaf said. He added that the PME, the Jeddah Municipality and the Saudi Boy Scouts Association along with some 1,000 volunteers have also contributed to make the campaign a success. According to Dr. Majeda Abu Ras, Vice Chairman of the Saudi Environment Society, the participation of the Society in such an event comes as part of its goals, activities and the message it is trying to convey. “For the first time, the Society will launch a program called (School of Environmental Sense). She added that the awareness campaign would also target motorists to alert them of what environmental dangers some of them can cause by simply throwing trash out of their car windows. “Some volunteering boy scouts will distribute plastic bags to drivers on main roads. The Society will also contribute to keeping Jeddah clean. Our campaign will include South Obhur area and will see a children's drawing contest on the Corniche to motivate youngsters and encourage them to keep their environment clean,” she added. Last year on the 39th Earth Day, a cleaning day was held in Jeddah with the cooperation of the US Consulate under the slogan “Protect the environment to protect yourself”.
