A Saudi female dentist has been given a financial grant to go to the United States to complete her potentially ground-breaking research into the use of stem cells to treat decaying teeth. Dr. Mai Bint Abdul Rahman Al-Habib is being sent by the Dentistry College at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah for postgraduate studies at Boston Medicine School. The aid is also the highest money ever given to a doctorate student in the history of the American Doctors Association. Al-Habib works as a lecturer at KAU. Al-Habib's new technique is expected to create a possible revolution in the treatment of the teeth's nerves because it will replace the current traditional treatment. It means that people may not have to throw away their wisdom teeth and children's teeth because they could be used at a later stage in treating many chronic diseases. She said the new technique is “major medical breakthrough” in the field of treatment of decayed teeth. Professor Jeffery Hutter, Dean of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University, said he was confident in the ability of Al-Habib to complete her research successfully. Boston University was providing its full support for her, he said.
