The Shoura Council is discussing the possibility of legislating punishment against those who maliciously file lawsuits without legal basis against public servants or others. A source told Okaz that the Council will approach the Ministry of Justice and request it to tackle the issue in accordance with regulatory and Shariah rules as it is leading to the accumulation of legal cases in the courts and is adding to the workload of judges. A proposed regulation that includes punishments will be announced after approval, the source said. The step comes after a recent increase in such lawsuits against employees. The new draft regulation – which is still being studied – involves imposing regulatory fees on those pursuing legal actions that have no legal basis. Shoura Council member Sulaiman Bin Abdullah Al-Majed said that not all lawsuits that lack legal basis are malicious. Some of them are valid, he said.
