An intermediate school student counselor in Makkah is being investigated for striking a first-year pupil in the face. The Girls' Education Department and the Commission for Investigation and Prosecution are both involved in the inquiry which, according to the girl's father, concerns “repeated beatings by the counselor and pupils” at the school in the district of Al-Nouriya, leading his daughter to refuse to attend school. Hamid Al-Salami, the head of Girls' Education in Makkah, said the claims were being investigated. “If the counselor is found guilty she will be punished appropriately,” Al-Salami said. According to a medical report the girl suffered bruising to her left cheek.
