Some 50 specialists from the ministries of Education and Higher Education are involved in the revision of curricula used by universities under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education. The new curricula will reportedly see the removal of a lot of material as authorities seek to “produce a generation able to instruct pupils in primary, intermediate and secondary schools”, according to an official in the Ministry of Education. The official said that the team of specialists would perform a “practical evaluation” of the educational programs used in Education, Science and Social Sciences Colleges which train schoolteachers, and a host of recommendations is expected to be produced by the review. The two ministries have teamed up in the effort after reportedly observing a poor standard of teachers coming through the university system, while the Ministry of Higher Education itself is dismayed at poorly educated school leavers, evidenced by the disappointing results obtained by aspiring teachers in nationwide aptitude tests.
