Kim Clijsters lost to 258th-ranked Beatriz Garcia Vidagany of Spain 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round of the Andalucia Open Thursday. Clijsters, fresh off her second title win of the year at Miami, was broken nine times in a seesaw match in which both players struggled on serve. Clijsters agreed during the Miami tournament to accept a wild card and play her first clay-court tournament in three years in preparation for the French Open next month. Garcia Vidagany came through qualifying to make her first main draw appearance on the WTA Tour. The third-seeded Clijsters was broken in the 11th game in losing the first set to Garcia Vidagany. In the second, Clijsters used one of her eight break points in the set to even it. Garcia Vidagany broke the Belgian to get ahead 2-1 in the final frame and went on to secure easily her biggest win and a spot in the quarterfinals. Garcia Vidagany will play Sara Errani next after the Italian player knocked off seventh-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-1, 7-6 (1). Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 win over wild card Estrella Cabeza Candela of Spain, while second-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy dispatched qualifier Laura Pous Tio of Spain 6-2, 6-2. Also, qualifier Simona Halep beat Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 7-6 (4) in an all-Romanian matchup while eighth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain hung on to defeat Polona Hercog of Slovenia 6-4, 7-6 (2) in a match featuring 11 break points. Wawrinka, Hanescu thru In Morocco, Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland and Romania's Victor Hanescu were both taken to a third set Thursday before advancing into the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix Hassan II. Top-seeded Wawrinka beat Slovakian qualifier Martin Klizan 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 while third-seeded Hanescu rallied after losing the first set to defeat Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Wawrinka will next play Morocco's Reda El Amrani, who defeated Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, and Hanescu will face France's Richard Gasquet, who routed Andrey Golubev 6-1, 6-1 in 45 minutes. Wozniacki advances In Florida, defending champion Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark defeated Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 6-1 Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the $220,000 MPS Group Championships. Wozniacki will meet fifth-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who advanced beating Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2. In other second-round matches, third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia beat Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia, 6-3, 6-3 and Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak got past Japan's Ayumi Morita 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Double blow for Schwank In Houston, Argentinian Eduardo Schwank was slapped with a $1,000 for his peculiar play and odd behavior during a three-set loss to Juan Ignacio Chela at the US Clay Court Championships. Schwank was fined after a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 loss Wednesday that advanced his countryman Chela to the quarterfinals of the rain-hit $442,000 tournament which is the only ATP event in the US contested on clay. Rain forced the postponement of defending champion Lleyton Hewitt's match against Somdev Devvarman of India until Thursday. This will mark Aussie Hewitt's first match since having his hip operated on at the end of January. Third-seeded American Sam Querrey's match against Blaz Kavcic of Slovania also was rescheduled for Thursday. In other matches Wednesday, Chile's Nicolas Massu outlasted American qualifier Ryan Sweeting 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in the longest three-set match of the 2010 ATP season. The marathon match lasted three hours and 25 minutes.
