Manners of the heart 1. Understanding the origin of the words. This is an indication to the greatness of the words being read, and the bounty of Allah to His creation when He addressed His creation with these words. 2. Placing into the heart the understanding that these words are not the words of man. Through this, the reader should think about the characteristics of Allah, the Exalted. 3. Presence of the heart while reading. Through this, the reader should discard other thoughts while reading the Qur'an. 4. Pondering over the meaning. There is no goodness in worship without understanding or in reading the Qur'an without pondering over its meaning. 5. Understanding the meaning. This means interacting and reacting with your heart to every verse in an appropriate manner. 6. Individualization. The reader should feel that every message in the Qur'an is meant especially for him personally. External manners 1. Make sure your body, clothes and the place where you recite is clean. Use the Siwak and face the Qiblah. 2. Seek refuge from the rejected Satan and read the basmalah (Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem). 3. Avoid breaks to talk with people. 4. When a verse of warning comes, stop and seek protection with Allah. When a verse of mercy comes, stop and ask the Merciful for His Bounty. 5. Humblesness and crying when reading. Imam An-Nawawi said: Crying when reading the Qur'an is a characteristic of those who know Allah (meaning, they know Him through His Names and Characteristics) and the feelings of the righteous. – SG Ref: Tajweed Rules of the Qur'an __
