MUSLIMS and Christians have been living in Egypt in peace for hundreds of years. The relationship between the followers of both religions is based on understanding and mutual respect. This harmonious relationship made an Egyptian-Christian write a very beautiful book about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In this article, I shall try to shed some light on this very beautiful book. To begin with, the name of the writer is Nazmi Luqa and the title of the book is Muhammad: The Message and the Messenger. It is equally important to point out that the book was written 50 years ago, but the ideas are so fresh as if the writer is taking us back to those days. He starts his analysis by saying that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent at the right time as humanity was ready to receive a final and comprehensive religion covering all aspects of life. Not only that, people were in dire need of a new religion that addresses both the heart and mind of man. Islam combined all these qualities and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the best embodiment of all the noble values, principles and ideals of this new religion. Luqa adds that this new religion was distinguished by the following characteristics: u It shows respect to all former religions. u It is based on monotheism which is the basis of any civilization. u It always strikes a balance between the body and the soul, between this life and the Hereafter, between personal desires and the needs of society…etc. u It emphasizes the idea of equality: all people are equal regardless of their color, race, language, wealth, culture,…etc. u It also emphasizes the idea of equality between man and woman, and yet each has a different, but complementary role to perform. u He also mentions that the noble values held dear by Muslim were reflected in the refined behavior of his Muslim neighbors who always showed respect for their Christian neighbors who, in their turn also showed respect for Islam and Muslims. This makes one emphasize that the noble values of Islam and Prophet Muhammad's character are fascinating to anybody regardless of his religious, linguistic or cultural background. In other words, Islam combines such virtues as tolerance, deep faith, open-mindedness, respect for the other and deep belief in equality. And without doubt, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the best embodiment of all these noble values. __
