Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia defeated Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 for her first WTA title at the Monterrey Open Sunday. The 28-year-old Pavlyuchenkova came back from a set down to overwhelm Hantuchova in the final of the hard-court tournament. Pavlyuchenkova also defeated Hantuchova earlier this season in a hard-court match in Dubai. Pavlyuchenkova played her second match of the day after earlier beating Anastasia Sevastova of Latvia 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in a make up of a semifinal that was rained out Saturday. Hantuchova was seeking her fourth WTA title. Pavlyuchenkova played the more daring match, racking up six aces to one for the Slovakian. She also double faulted seven times and managed to save 4 of 6 break points. Pavlyuchenkova reached the quarterfinals in a WTA event in Brisbane in January, but was knocked out in the second round of the Australian Open later that month. NZ wants Pak tie moved New Zealand wants its Davis Cup tie against Pakistan moved from the South Asian country because of terrorism fears, a tennis official said Monday. New Zealand won its Asia-Oceania zone group two tie against Sri Lanka 3-2 in Colombo at the weekend and is now due to face Pakistan in a semifinal in Pakistan starting in July. But security fears mean Tennis New Zealand (TNZ) wants the tie moved to New Zealand or a neutral venue. “We spoke to the ITF (International Tennis Federation) last December when the draw came out and they said they would not review the situation until both Pakistan and New Zealand got through the first round,” TNZ events and operations manager Tracy Hall said. “As of today we have emailed the ITF asking about the process and what we need to do to have it reviewed.” Hall was unsure whether the Pakistanis would be prepared to give up home court advantage. Foreign sports teams have shunned Pakistan since an attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in March last year. A cricket Test series between New Zealand and Pakistan scheduled to be played in Pakistan last year was moved to New Zealand and a one-day series was played in the United Arab Emirates. Chile eliminates Israel Chile secured a spot in the Davis Cup quarterfinals Monday after Fernando Gonzalez defeated Dudi Sela of Israel 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to give the South Americans an unassailable 3-1 lead in their first-round series. Chile will face the Czech Republic in the next round. The Davis Cup series in Chile started a day late after the Israeli team had problems arriving in the country following the devastating earthquake that hit just over a week ago. The tie was played in Coquimbo, located about 500km north of Santiago. Chile's Jorge Aguilar beat Harel Levy of Israel in the last meaningless singles match 7-6(3), 6
