October 2005: Around 86,000 were killed and an estimated 4 million were left homeless as the region's brutal winter approached. The earthquake centered in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, near the city of Muzaffarabad, affecting the Gilgit-Baltistan and North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) regions of Pakistan. The severity of the damage caused by the earthquake is attributed to severe up thrust, coupled with poor construction.
