Police in Makkah are investigating the death of a woman in her ninth month of pregnancy on Monday after she reportedly underwent an abortion operation. The woman was taken to a private hospital in Makkah which informed the police that the deceased showed signs of having been subject to “aggression in the area of her abdomen”. It is learnt that the husband of the woman, who was of African origin, told investigators that she had tried to have an abortion but when her condition deteriorated he took her to the hospital where she passed away shortly afterwards. Investigators are seeking to establish whether the abortion operation was attempted out of health reasons or in order to terminate the life of the fetus. According to the spokesman for Makkah Police, Abdulmohsen Al-Maiman, forensic specialists have taken the body away to investigate the cause of death. “We cannot say whether any criminal offense is involved before we see the medical report,” Al-Maiman said. “Police are also still questioning the husband of the deceased.”
