Looking like an orbiting spaceship, a stingless jellyfish swims just under the surface of a remote lake in Surigao province. The creatures, which can sometimes be found in thousands near the surface vary in color from a bright yellow to a bluish white and are found in only a few places in the world, including this lake and in another lake in Micronesian Palau. It is believed that the species became cut off from the sea by volcanic activity thousands of years ago, and without their natural predators their venomous stings disappeared in an evolutionary process.
