The Shoura (Consultative) Council has issued a report warning that the Kingdom's markets are under threat from dumping by foreign companies. The report pointed out that the country does not have effective anti-dumping legislation. Locally produced products cannot compete with the massive inflow of cheap goods from foreign destinations. The report stated that the Ministry of Trade and Industry has prepared an anti-dumping draft law but this has not been finalized yet. Compounding the problem further is the fact that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has not been able to put in place unified anti-dumping legislation. In addition, there is a lack of trained and efficient inspectors at the General Administration for Combating Dumping to deal with this issue. Fadl Albuainyan, an economic expert, said the Kingdom should put in place effective measures to protect the Saudi economy from an influx of fake and inferior quality products. He said this is the responsibility of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Saudi Customs and the Saudi Arabian Specifications and Standards Organization (SASSO). He said that Saudi trade attaches have a role to play in protecting Saudi merchants.
