The National Water Company has completed an urgent plan for the expansion of Al-Ruwais and Al-Balad sewage treatment plants in Jeddah by designing for a doubling of capacity within a year and building an industrial waste plant in Al-Khumrah. Since assuming control of the water and sewer sectors in Jeddah, the NWC has carried out urgent works costing SR300 million to cope with the quantities of sewage and is currently constructing two new treatment plants each with capacities of 250,000 cubic meters per day. The first plant – Airport Plant 1 – will undergo a test run in the third quarter of 2010 and two pumping stations are to be built, one in the north and the other in the south of Jeddah, each with a design capacity of over 700,000 cubic meters per day. Produce from these plants will be used for agricultural and industrial purposes.
