The Mayoralty has demolished 111 dilapidated buildings as part of its drive to rid the city of old, ramshackle structures which pose a hazard to residents. Based on the report of a specialist committee, more than 1,130 such structures have been identified in various districts of the city, Khaled Al-Zainy, head of the committee, told Saudi Gazette. The Mayoralty will seek a detailed report on buildings which are abandoned or damaged and need to be demolished in the second phase. Some of the abandoned buildings, especially in south Jeddah, have been turned into dens for thieves and criminals. The owners of buildings which have been identified for demolition have been asked to submit title deeds for compensation.
