Mathew Tait scored the only try of the match to help England to a labored 17-12 win over Italy in the second round of the Six Nations Sunday. The center crossed early in the second half after linking with Delon Armitage and Ugo Monye. Flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson scored England's other points at Stadio Flaminio, with three penalties and a drop goal. Mirco Bergamasco scored four penalties for Italy, in a match in which Nick Mallett's home side markedly improved from its opening 29-11 loss to Ireland. England was helped by Italy having to play with 14 men in the second half after prop Martin Castrogiovanni was yellow carded for killing the ball. “If you are in that close a game it can go either way,” England team manager Martin Johnson said. “Italy didn't look like scoring a try, but we gave away a silly penalty at the end that kept Italy in the game.” Italy hosts Scotland and England meets Ireland at Twickenham in the next round.
