American journeyman Paul Goydos stayed on track for a surprise victory by preserving a one-shot lead midway through the Players Championship final round on Sunday. A stroke in front overnight, the former substitute teacher reached the turn in two-over-par 38 in brutal conditions at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass. That left Goydos at five under overall on a day of survival with strong winds gusting up to around 65kph. Fellow American Kenny Perry was alone in second place, also after nine holes, with Spaniard Sergio Garcia a further stroke back in a tie for third at three under with American Briny Baird. Seeking his third PGA Tour title, world number 169 Goydos made a faltering start with a bogey at the par-five second after overhitting the green with his third shot. However, the 43-year-old remained one ahead of the pack with his playing partner Perry having bogeyed the opening hole after driving into the left fairway bunker. Goydos dropped another stroke at the par-three third after his tee shot ended up in sand to briefly slip back into a tie for the lead with Perry at five under. At the fourth, Goydos benefited from a dramatic two-shot swing. He rolled in a slick, downhill putt from 50 feet for birdie before Perry bogeyed the hole after finding another bunker off the tee. Goydos again surrendered the outright lead after being on the wrong end of a two-shot swing at the par-four fifth. He three-putted for bogey while Perry coaxed in a 28-foot birdie putt to draw level at five under. American Boo Weekley highlighted the battle for survival in the strong, gusting winds. He bogeyed the par-three eighth after being penalized a stroke for addressing his ball on the green before it was blown two feet away by a sudden gust. Sorenstam 3-strokes ahead In Virginia, former world number one Annika Sorenstam outclassed top-ranked Lorena Ochoa in a head-to-head duel Saturday to keeps a three-stroke lead after three rounds of the LPGA Michelob Ultra Open. Swedish legend Sorenstam, a winner in 19 of the past 20 events she has led entering the final round, fired a two-under par 69 to stand on 14-under 199 after 54 holes at Kingsmill with South Korean Jeong Jang three back after a 69. Sorenstam, who fired two of her three lowest rounds of the past two years on Thursday and Friday, seeks her 72nd career title and a $330,000 top prize at the $2.2 million event. A birdie at the seventh and back-to-back 20-foot curving birdie putts at 13 and 14 gave Sorenstam a four-stroke lead on Jang after 17 holes. But Sorenstam splashed her tee shot at 18 into the water and scrambled to rescue a bogey, her first of the week, to keep the same lead as she had when she began the round. Playing alongside Sorenstam for the third day in a row, Ochoa struggled through the round after starting the day sharing second with Jang. She finished with a 74 to share 10th on 207. American Christina Kim was third on 203, two strokes ahead of Sweden's Maria Hjorth with Britain's Karen Stupples, Taiwan's Candie Kung and Koreans Ji-Young Oh, Jee Young Lee and In
