Red Wings too good for Sharks again
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 04 - 02 - 2010

The Detroit Red Wings came from an early two-goal deficit to beat San Jose 4-2 Tuesday, extending their uncanny dominance of the NHL Western Conference-leading Sharks.
Derek Meech scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, while Dan Cleary, Henrik Zetterberg, and Patrick Eaves also found the net for the Red Wings, who are 3-0 against the Sharks but have struggled against almost everyone else this season.
The Red Wings, who have won the Western Conference the past two seasons, are fighting just to make the playoffs this year in a season hampered by injuries.
Joe Thornton scored both goals for the Sharks, whose only two regulation losses in their past 12 games have been at home against Detroit.
Capitals 4, Bruins 1: In Boston, Washington set a franchise record with an 11th straight win and sent Boston to its eighth consecutive loss.
Washington – the league's highest-scoring team – trailed Boston – the league's lowest-scoring team – after David Krejci's first-period goal.
But the Capitals tied it through Mike Knuble's early in the second, and Brooks Laich put the visitors ahead in the third. That was followed soon after by Boyd Gordon's goal and Alex Ovechkin added the late empty-netter.
The Capitals broke the club record streak set in 1983-84 and have the NHL's longest winning streak since San Jose also won 11 in a row late in the 2007-08 season.
Washington took over the league points lead from San Jose.
Coyotes 1, Predators 0, SO: In Nashville, Tennessee, Adrian Aucoin lifted a wrister over the glove of Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne in the 10th round of the shootout to give Phoenix its fifth straight win.
Phoenix's Lauri Korpikoski scored in the second round of the shootout, but David Legwand tied it as Nashville's third shooter. The Predators had a chance to keep the shootout going after Aucoin scored, but Shea Weber's shot went wide.
The Coyotes matched their best winning streak of the season.
Canadiens 3, Canucks 2: In Montreal, Vancouver's seven-game winning run was ended by Montreal.
Jaroslav Halak made 45 saves, while Sergei Kostitsyn, Maxim Lapierre and Tomas Plekanec scored for the Canadiens, who won their first game in four.
Mikael Samuelsson and Ryan Kesler scored power-play goals for the Canucks, who were playing the second of 14 straight away games caused by Vancouver hosting the Olympics.
Kings 2, Rangers 1: In Los Angeles, the hosts made it seven straight wins by edging punchless New York.
Anze Kopitar scored a short-handed goal and Jonathan Quick made 20 saves, while Ryan Smyth scored late for the Kings, who are on their longest winning streak since early 1992, when Wayne Gretzky led the Kings to a franchise-record eight straight.
Marian Gaborik scored with 2:37 left to ruin Quick's shutout bid, but New York lost its sixth in seven games despite the arrivals of new forwards Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust, acquired in a trade with Calgary less than 24 hours earlier.
Avalanche 5, Blue Jackets 1: In Denver, Brandon Yip had two goals, including the go-ahead score, as Colorado ended a run of three lossess by routing Columbus.
Maple Leafs 3, Devils 0: In Toronto, Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Dion Phaneuf made the most of their Maple Leafs debuts as Toronto topped New Jersey to snap a six-game losing streak.
Stars 4, Wild 2: In Dallas, the hosts stretched their run of home wins over Minnesota to 12.
Marty Turco made a season-high 40 saves and Mike Modano scored his 556th career goal for the Stars.
Lightning 2, Thrashers 1: In Atlanta, Tampa Bay goalie Antero Niittymaki stopped 26 shots for his 16th straight win over Atlanta.
