Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs scored a goal each Sunday to give Manchester United its 10th Premier League title in 16 years after a 2-0 victory over Wigan. Second-place Chelsea, which was even on points going into the final day of the season but trailing on goal difference, was held to a 1-1 draw by Bolton and finished two points behind. United won with 87 points and Chelsea, which finishes runner-up for the second season in a row, has 85. At the other end, Birmingham and Reading were relegated despite winning with four-goal performances. Birmingham beat Blackburn 4-1 and Reading defeated last-place Derby 4-0. But Fulham survived after a 1-0 victory at FA Cup finalist Portsmouth on Danny Murphy's 87th-minute goal. The most stunning result of the final day was Manchester City's 8-1 loss at Middlesbrough in what could be Sven-Goran Eriksson's final game as City manager. Eriksson's future is in doubt after failing to get City into European competition next season after a ninth-place finish. Also, third-place Arsenal beat Sunderland 1-0 and fourth-place Liverpool won at Tottenham 2-0. There was tension at Wigan's JJB Stadium and Chelsea's Stamford Bridge as the two title contenders went into the final day even on points. United defender Rio Ferdinand was lucky not to give away an early penalty when a shot from Jason Koumas hit him on the arm. But United was awarded one in the 33rd after Emerson Boyce's foul on Wayne Rooney. Ronaldo's spot kick gave him his 31st league goal of the season and 41st overall. While everything was going right for United, it was all going wrong for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. After an early miss by Didier Drogba, captain John Terry was carried off the field with a serious arm injury after colliding with his own goalkeeper, Petr Cech. Andriy Shevchenko put the Blues ahead in the 62nd minute, however, to give Chelsea some hope. But after Giggs scored at Wigan, Davies replied for Bolton and Chelsea fell two points short. Even if Chelsea had won at home, United still would have won the title on goal difference. Italian title goes to the wire Christian Panucci and Daniele De Rossi scored to lead AS Roma to a 2-1 victory over Atalanta and move within one point of Serie A leader Inter Milan with one round left in the season. Panucci headed home in the 23rd minute, and De Rossi scored on a free kick in the 67th that found the top corner of the net. Gianpaolo Bellini scored for Atalanta in the 88th. Inter could only draw 2-2 at home to Siena, which twice rallied from a goal down. Inter defender Marco Materazzi missed a penalty in the 78th that would have put the defending champion ahead 3-2. Inter leads with 82 points, while Roma has 81. In the final round, Inter travels to play Parma, which has to win to avoid relegation. Roma plays at Catania, which will be relegated if it loses and Parma wins. Also, Sunday it was: Fiorentina 3, Parma 1; Genoa 0, Lazio 2; Juventus 1, Catania 1; Livorno 0, Torino 1; Napoli 3, AC Milan 1; Palermo 0, Sampdoria 2; Reggina 2, Empoli 0; and Udinese 0, Cagliari 2. Celtic four points clear In Glasgow, Stephen McManus and Scott McDonald scored a goal each Sunday to help Celtic beat Hibernian 2-0 and restore the team's four-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League. Celtic's 27th league win of the season gives the team 86 points from 37 games with one match to go. Second-place Rangers, which beat Dundee United 3-1 Saturday, has 82 points but has two games in hand. Rangers, which has won the League Cup, faces Zenit St. Petersburg in Wednesday's UEFA Cup final and is in the Scottish Cup final on May 24 against Queen of the South.
