The latest technology is being used by a security unit in Riyadh to uncover and apprehend those involved in perpetrating cyber crime in the Kingdom, according to Brig. Gen. Aqeel Bin Muhammad Al-Aqeel, Director of the Criminal Evidence Administration of Public Security, Ministry of Interior. He said that the unit will monitor computer crimes and data storage and explore the means for pursuing those who try to exploit technology for criminal purposes, such as blackmail, cyber threats, electronic theft and financial robbery. Al-Aqeel said his administration has recruited 10 security officers who will provide intensive specialist training courses to criminal security personnel. He cautioned the public to be vigilant when involved in electronic dealings, as the Kingdom has witnessed a number of cyber crimes whose victims are usually those not conversant with modern technology. For this reason, the level of public awareness must be raised to prevent people falling victim to these modern high-tech criminals. The Riyadh cyber crime unit is provided with all the technology necessary to detect and arrest cyber criminals, Al-Aqeel said. Units will be launched soon in the Eastern Province and Jeddah in preparation for establishing specialist cyber crime units in all regions of the country, he added.
