Shalhoub of the Environment Monitoring and Protection Authority has been awarded the Best Environmental Research into Climate Change prize by the Regional Maritime Environment Protection Organization. Al-Shalhoub received the prize at a ceremony recently in Bahrain for his research into the projected effects of climate change in the Arab Gulf states highlighting the Gulf zones under environmental and economic threat due to climate change. The study cited principally the threat posed to the Arabian Gulf by rising sea levels, notably at Shatt Al-Arab, the south of Iraq and north Kuwait, as well as the smaller islands of the Gulf and the Kingdom of Bahrain which, according to the study, would lose 11 percent of its surface area should sea levels rise by 50 cm. The study produced recommendations outlining the measures required to confront the threat, assist coastal authorities and increase awareness, and make greater commitment to agreements resolved to protect the coasts and the environment of the Gulf.
