Nearly 2,000 young men and women in Madina have launched a campaign for decent social shopping behaviors in a bid to outlaw sexual harassment and flirting at malls. “We want to curb sexual harassment and flirting at malls and the indecent clothing of shoppers,” said Abdullah Al-Iqab, a campaign organizer. The campaign members are trying to spread the word that everyone should be responsible shoppers, he said. The campaign does not intend to impede personal freedom, but rather promote decency, he added. The campaign has received favorable responses from shoppers who want to do their shopping without being bothered. In the past, Saudi malls were a place where young men would “tailgate” women as they shop in hope of establishing an “illegal” relationship through an exchange of phone numbers. But with today's technology, flirting has taken on a different twist via Bluetooth, breaking all segregation barriers at malls. Bluetooth-enabled phones have made it more fun coming to a mall or a restaurant these days to flirt, one shopper said. “The campaign may not change much, because it is just natural to make a contact with the opposite sex,” one shopper said. The organizers said that they still hope that technology would not be misused. The campaign has launched a Facebook page to gather more momentum Kingdom
