Josh Beckett threw his 1,000th career strikeout as the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1 in the American League on Thursday. Beckett threw eight strikeouts in all, giving up only one run in seven innings, while Kevin Youkilis hit his third home run in two games for Boston. The Red Sox have won six of their past seven, while Detroit has lost six of seven. Rangers 5, Mariners 0: In Seattle, Ian Kinsler hit a two-run homer and then got hit by a pitch, sparking a brawl as Texas shut down Seattle. After Kinsler was hit in the top of the fourth inning, and chose not to react, Mariners slugger Richie Sexson received a head-high pitch in the bottom of the inning in apparent retribution. Sexson charged the mound and flung his helmet at Rangers pitcher Kason Gabbard, prompting both benches to clear. Sexson was ejected. Seattle hasn't scored in 22 straight innings. Yankees 6, Indians 3: In New York, four Yankees homered as New York beat Cleveland. Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit all went long for the Yankees, who prevented being swept at home by the Indians for the first time since 1989. The four home runs tied New York's season high. Orioles 4, Royals 1: In Kansas City, Missouri, Baltimore snapped a five-game losing streak by downing Kansas City. Daniel Cabrera threw a three-hitter to remain perfect against Kansas City and Nick Markakis backed him with a three-run homer. Webb makes it 8-0 Brandon Webb became the first pitcher to win his first eight starts in three years, tossing his 13th career complete game to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 on Thursday. The 2006 National League Cy Young pitching award winner struck out four and didn't walk a batter in his first complete game of the year. He hit one batter. Webb (8-0) became the first pitcher to win his first eight starts since Jon Garland of the Chicago White Sox in 2005 and the first in the NL since Pedro Martinez for Montreal in 1997. Webb stifled the Phillies on three hits through eight innings before allowing two runs and three hits in the ninth. Philadelphia's first-inning run was unearned. Chris Young hit a two-run drive, his second homer in as many games, and Chris Snyder had a two-run double for the Diamondbacks, who split a four-game series with Philadelphia to finish their longest homestand of the season 5-5. Justin Upton added a solo home run for Arizona. Nationals 8, Astros 3: At Houston, Willie Harris and Rob Mackowiak homered and Washington ended HGouston's five-game winning streak. The Astros averaged 7.3 runs and 11.5 hits in their previous eight home games. Austin Kearns had a two-run single off Brandon Backe (2-4) as the Nationals won for the third time in their last 15 road games. Backe had a career-high nine strikeouts, but lost for only the fifth time in his last 21 decisions at home.
