Brodeur extends NHL record
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 14 - 01 - 2010

Patrik Elias scored the only goal of a shootout and Martin Brodeur earned his fourth shutout in the last 10 games as the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers 1-0 in the NHL Tuesday.
Elias connected in the fourth round, snapping a shot past Henrik Lundqvist's glove.
With the shutout, Brodeur extended his NHL record to 107, making 51 saves through overtime and four more in the shootout. Lundqvist stopped 45 through overtime to earn his second shutout this season.
Sharks 3, Coyotes 1: At Glendale, Arizona, Patrick Marleau scored two more goals to stay ahead of the NHL with 31 and added an assist to help lead San Jose past slumping Phoenix.
Dany Heatley scored his 27th goal and Joe Thornton added his league-leading 49th assist for the Sharks, who won their second straight and third in a row over the Coyotes.
The Coyotes, which had pulled within three points of the Sharks for the Pacific Division lead two weeks ago lost for the fifth time in six games (1-3-2) to fall 10 points behind San Jose. Phoenix has lost three straight for the first time this season.
Thrashers 6, Senators 1: At Atlanta, Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists as Atlanta got its first regulation victory in 21 games.
The Thrashers, who had lost 11 of their previous 12, were coming off an embarrassing 8-1 home loss to Southeast Division rival Washington on Saturday.
Atlanta goaltender Ondrej Pavelec made 30 saves and the Thrashers held Ottawa to 0 for on power plays.
Already without captain Daniel Alfredsson, who's recovering from a separated shoulder, the Senators played their second straight game without defenseman Filip Kuba (upper body) and third straight without Milan Michalek (upper body). Centers Jason Spezza (knee) and Jesse Winchester (knee) are out indefinitely.
Lightning 7, Capitals 4: At Tampa, Florida, Martin St. Louis scored the go-ahead goal as Tampa Bay ended a 12-game losing streak to Washington.
After the Lightning blew a three-goal lead, St. Louis' 250th career goal put Tampa Bay up 5-4 lead with 2:32 left in the second. The right wing extended his point streak to 11 games (11 assists, 17 points).
Steven Stamkos had a pair of power-play goals as the Lightning took a 4-1 first-period lead. Vincent Lecavalier, Stephane Veilleux, Kurtis Foster and Jeff Halpern had the other Lightning goals. St. Louis added two assists.
Islanders 6, Red Wings 0: At Uniondale, New York, Rob Schremp posted his first two-goal game in the NHL, and Dwayne Roloson earned perhaps the easiest shutout of his career.
Flyers 6, Stars 3: At Philadelphia, Simon Gagne, Darroll Powe and Ian Laperriere each had a goal and an assist to help Philadelphia win its fourth straight game and send Dallas to its eighth straight road loss.
Hurricanes 4, Maple Leafs 2: At Toronto, Patrick Dwyer scored with less than five minutes remaining as Carolina downed Toronto.
Blues 4, Blue Jackets 1: At St. Louis, Jay McClement had a goal and assist in the first period to help St. Louis beat Columbus and end a five-game home losing streak.
Predators 5, Oilers 3: At Edmonton, Alberta, Ryan Jones had a goal and two assists to help Nashville beat struggling Edmonton.
