Khobar are seeking to imprison their husbands and guardians over “mental and physical abuse” through the courts. The Summary Court in Al-Khobar currently has five cases on its books, a rare event given that, according to sources, most cases of the same nature are resolved by the parties involved before ever reaching court. “Rulings have been issued in some of the cases,” said Saleh Al-Yousif, head of Al-Khobar's Shariah Courts. “Islam guarantees women their integrity, and rejects any exploitation of their weakness or any physical or verbal abuse.” Al-Yousif said the Summary Court was brought the five cases at various times over the last year. Authorities are currently studying the Family and Child Protection Law which legal scholars expect to curb the abuse of wives and children.
