Global energy collaboration urged
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 08 - 05 - 2008

day energy symposium that ended on Tuesday hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at their campus in Boston, was a “meeting of the minds” to discuss opportunities for collaboration in new energy developments. Discussion on sustainable development, global education, joint research, and the challenges facing the world's energy resources were also highlighted in the event.
Organized by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's investment in developing future energy solutions, was attended by 200 global companies from the Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) of the MIT.
The symposium included addresses from Masdar, Abu Dhabi entities and industry leaders, as well as MIT faculty including Susan Hockfield, president of MIT.
“With systematic involvement in every facet of alternative energy, Masdar presents a unique opportunity for global clean energy technology providers to collaborate and share best practices within the scope of pro-typical projects and innovations,” said Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber, Masdar CEO. “Our world today is on the cusp of an energy evolution and we at Masdar, and through collaboration with organizations such as MIT, intend to lead that evolution,” he added.
The event was a remarkable platform to introduce the Masdar Initiative to ILP members and to highlight the strategic partnership between MIT and the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). MIST, which is currently being developed in cooperation with MIT, will leverage its broad international experience to assist Masdar in establishing a sustainable, homegrown academic and scientific research institute.
MIST will also emulate MIT's high standards and develop and nurture Masdar's own unique identity. Masdar and MIT share a common vision and have placed alternative energy at the top of their agendas. This joint effort in education and R&D will help drive technological advancement in renewable, alternative and sustainable forms of energy.
The event agenda also included a panel discussion with the US Department of Energy (DOE). The DOE extended an invitation to Masdar leadership to discuss collaboration on clean energy technology investments and participation opportunities in Masdar's zero-carbon, zero-waste city.
The panel was chaired by Paul Dickerson, DOE chief operating officer.
Attendees of the Masdar symposium included leaders in government, business, investment and energy from the ILP. The MIT ILP has as a strong track record of facilitating productive meetings to engage its members with trendsetters and thought leaders within various industry segments. It provides approximately 200 leading companies with professionally coordinated access to MIT's intellectual capital, research facilities, and information resources to help them bring innovations to market.
Members of the ILP include, among others, 3M, Apple Computer, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, BAE Systems, BMW AG, GE, Kuwait Petroleum, Petrobras, Pixar Animation Studios, Reliance Industries, Siemens AG, Tata Steel and Toyota Motor Corporation. __
