Medical circles in Jeddah bade farewell to Dr. Tareq Al-Juhani, a dentist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital here, who died on Friday after having been in a coma for three months as a result of medical error. Dr. Al-Juhani did not regain consciousness after undergoing a stomach bypass operation in a private hospital in Jeddah three months ago. Immediately after his death, the General Directorate of Health Affairs in Jeddah set up a committee to investigate what went wrong. The directorate ordered the hospital to hand over to the committee Al-Juhani's medical file and also to prevent the woman anesthesiologist who anesthetized Al-Juhani from leaving the Kingdom. She has been summoned to appear before the committee. Informed sources said the anesthesiologist admitted that she was not licensed by the Saudi Health Specialists Commission, claiming that she was in the Kingdom on Haj visa and had joined the hospital during the official holiday of the government agencies in order to work with her husband who was a doctor in the hospital. The sources said the preliminary committee has already submitted its recommendations to the Shariah Medical Committee, pointing out that the committee recommended the closure of the operation room in the hospital and fining the hospital SR500,000. Sulaiman Al-Juhani, a retired colonel in the Saudi Armed Forces, allegedly said the hospital tried to justify its mistake by claiming that his son was asthmatic due to which he had developed fatal complications. Muhammad Al-Juhani, a brother of the deceased, held the hospital accountable for the death of his brother.
