The Bangladeshi community in Jeddah celebrated the 39th ‘Victory Day' of their country on Dec. 16 last week. A discussion was held at the Bangladeshi consulate on the importance and significance of the day. Consulate officials read out messages from Bangladesh's president, prime minister, and foreign minister. Highlighting the invaluable sacrifices of the freedom fighters, the messages urged Bangladeshi nationals to work together to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh that provides a decent and secured life to its people. Addressing the gathering, Bangladeshi Consul General Mohammed Golam Sarwar said: “On this day in 1971, the Pakistani army surrendered to the Indo-Bangladeshi High Command in Dhaka, ending a nine- month war of independence. Bangladesh gained independence after a long bloody struggle.” “Three million martyrs sacrificed their lives in the 1971 liberation war. This day is marked to remember the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters,” he added. A cultural program in the consulate premises that was attended by tens of Bangladeshi nationals marked the celebrations.
