To mark the 82nd birthday of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which is also the Thai National Day, the country's consulate in Jeddah hosted a reception for diplomats and prominent businessmen last week at the Jeddah Inter-Continental Hotel, while a separate gathering for the Thai community was held at the Consul General's residence, Thursday. Acting Consul General Surin Jema greeted members of the Thai community and spoke of the importance of the day and of the many accomplishments of the king. Later the audience was entertained by children from the Thai community dressed in colorful costumes who gave a lively performance of traditional Thai dances. The month of December each year is an important time for the people of Thailand, as the entire country celebrates the king's birthday on Dec. 5. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, whose name means “the strength of the land,” has been the King of Thailand for 63 years and is the world's longest reigning monarch. He acceded to the throne in 1946 and has devoted himself to the development of Thailand in many areas, particularly at strengthening local communities so that they are able to support themselves. Most of the king's efforts to improve the lives of his people have focused on remote areas of the country, which are most in need of assistance. In recognition of his dedication to human development, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan presented him with the United Nations' first Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award in May 2006. The king is renowned for his expertise in many fields. His interests range from artistic endeavors to sports, agriculture, and even to scientific invention and innovation. From painting, photography, to sailboat design and construction, he has demonstrated exceptional ingenuity as a “great all-rounder.” He is also recognized as a man of ability and talent, both in his work and in his leisure activities.
