Everton draws with Spurs, Defoe misses penalty
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 07 - 12 - 2009

Two goals in a frantic last 12 minutes and a stoppage-time penalty save by Tim Howard gave Everton a barely deserved but desperately needed 2-2 home Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur Sunday.
Spurs were cruising after goals by Jermain Defoe and Michael Dawson but Everton hit back through Louis Saha and Tim Cahill before Defoe's penalty was saved by Howard's legs.
The result meant that Spurs remain fourth in the standings on 27, one behind Arsenal after their 2-0 home win over Stoke City on Saturday.
Chelsea, beaten 2-1 by Manchester City, still leads the way on 36 points, two ahead of Manchester United, which won 4-0 at West Ham United.
In Sunday's other game Fulham beat Sunderland 1-0 with an early goal by Bobby Zamora, and moved up to eighth.
Werder, Cologne draw 0-0
Werder Bremen failed to make up ground on Bundesliga leader Bayer Leverkusen when it managed only a 0-0 draw Sunday at lowly Cologne.
Werder extended its unbeaten run to 23 games in all competitions but remained three points behind Leverkusen.
In the late game, Schalke beat bottom-place Hertha Berlin 2-0 to move past Bayern into third place.
By remaining undefeated in 15 games, Leverkusen improved on its 14-game undefeated start from the 2001-02 season.
Jupp Heynckes' team now has 31 points. Bremen has 28 and a better goal difference than Schalke, which also has 28. Bayern is now fourth with 27.
Roma beats Lazio
Marco Cassetti scored in the 79th minute to give AS Roma a 1-0 victory over Lazio in a Rome derby Sunday that was marred by a brief first-half suspension due to exploding firecrackers in the stands.
It was Cassetti's first goal since the 2006-07 season.
In an earlier match, French striker Jonathan Biabiany scored his first two goals in Serie A to earn Parma a 2-2 draw at Genoa.
Parma, which was in Serie B last season, has 25 points – one more than Fiorentina, Roma, Genoa and Sampdoria. Fourth place will be rewarded with the final Champions League spot in Italy at the end of the season.
Inter Milan leads with 35 points, AC Milan is next with 31 and Juventus has 30.
Fiorentina labored to a 2-0 win over Atalanta.
Also on sunday it was: Napoli 3 Bari 2, Bologna 2 Udinese 1, Palermo 2 Cagliari 1, Chievo Verona 2 Livorno 0, Siena 3 Catania 2.
