Many VIP camps in Mina violate safety regulations because of the continued use of highly flammable furnishings. Both foreign and local companies are breaking the rules at their five-star facilities. Brig. Gen. Fehaid Al-Faidi, Commander of the Civil Defense Force in Mina, stressed that VIP camps are not allowed to use Arab sofas (Majlis Arabi) which are made of sponge and plastic because these materials are highly flammable. Al-Faidi said the use of simple materials that are not combustible or flammable is safer for pilgrims. He said the Civil Defense is trying to limit the use of these types of furniture at the Haj camps. However, the owners of some of the VIP camps said they are taking measures to protect their customers and to comply with the safety guidelines set by the government. An owner, who requested anonymity, said: “Providing high class services in the camps is a gain for many pilgrims, who prefer to perform Haj in a comfortable spiritual atmosphere. We make sure that there is safety and security in our camps and pilgrims should not fear any sudden hazards.” VIP camps are characterized by luxury services and strategic locations at Mina. They are just several meters from the Jamarat Bridge. This allows pilgrims to reach the bridge in a short time during the Tashreeq days – the three days of ritual stoning. The VIP camps charge between SR10,000 and SR75,000 for accommodation, meals and transportation between the holy sites.
