Shoura Council Monday approved a draft law to allow qualified workshops and other companies to perform motor vehicle periodic inspection, reported the Saudi Press Agency. At present only Alesayi Group under the auspices of the General Traffic Directorate (Ministry of Interior) conducts MVPI. The consultative council in its regular session chaired by Dr. Saleh Bin Abdullah Al-Humaid also approved the MVPI restructuring as recommended by the Security Affairs Committee. As per the draft law, MVPI will be under direct supervision of the General Traffic Directorate, which would follow up and supervise the inspection procedures. Licensed companies will only detect technical faults in the vehicle and won't get involved in its repair or selling spare parts. The companies will supply the needed equipment for motor vehicle periodic inspection stations and prepare infrastructure and integrated facilities for this purpose. The licensed companies will train technical staff and adopt an efficient system to make sure that MVPI stickers are not tampered with or misused. The MVPI stations should be run by qualified employees and the percentage of Saudi workers should not be less than 10% of the total technical staff. The percentage of Saudi workers will be gradually increased to 100% in 10 years. The MVPI Program was launched by the Alesayi Group under the auspices of the General Traffic Directorate (Ministry of Interior) in 1986. Over the following 2 years a comprehensive network of fully integrated/computerized inspection center was established in all centers in the Kingdom. __
