VOICES FROM THE INTERNET Breast cancer The recent debate in America in which the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends women do not need annual mammograms for detection of breast cancer or breast anomalies until age 50 not only hurts millions of women in America but has tentacles which will impact on Saudi Arabia too. This is a subject on which I personally have very strong beliefs. If it had not been for a mammogram I would probably have not known that I had breast cancer and yes, I was less than 50 years of age. So why can a debate initiated from America about the need for mammograms have an impact on Saudi Arabia? Breast Cancer remains one of the leading killers of women in Saudi Arabia in spite of that – if detected early enough – it can be treated and cured. I emphasize the need for early detection because Saudi Arabia continues to face challenges of erasing the image that breast cancer is only a “woman's problem” and a woman diagnosed with breast cancer may be viewed as undesirable or unmarriageable. As a result many Saudi women choose not to have even a routine mammogram due to a fear of the results. Additionally there is a high incidence of Saudi women who elect to remain silent about a lump or growth on their breast for fear of isolation from their husband or a sense of shame about their body. Therefore by the time a woman may be seen for treatment the cancer has spread to the point where it is no longer curable. – americanbedu.com Chrome OS If you're interested in getting to know Google Chrome OS, Google's latest development in re-creating how we use computers, the videos after the jump are a great start. The funny thing about Google Chrome OS is that it's ambitious in what it's trying to do but relatively tame in its execution. The idea of Google Chrome OS centers around creating a browser as the Operating System, which makes some sense for a lot of users. Since what we do on a computer is often just access the internet through the browser already, the extra weight and fluff of an OS doesn't apply as much anymore. – androidcentral.com End of Oprah? It's true! Oprah Winfrey is putting “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in it's grave in 2011, 25 years after first airing and sucking up all of our afternoons. She has done so much with her show, helping people, giving them a voice, and aiding those in need. The news came from a tweet from @ontheredcarpet, saying, “BREAKING NEWS: @oPRAH announces The Oprah Winfrey Show will end on September 9, 2011 after 25 years on the air.” That was followed by a confirmation via press release from the President of Harpo, Tim Bennett. He said, “Tomorrow, Oprah will announce live on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show' that she has decided to end what is arguably one of the most popular, influential and enduring programs in television history.” I have to wonder what she'll be doing next. Any thoughts?
