Late night security campaigns led by the Makkah Passport Department continued into a pleasant morning with nabbing 115 illegal foreigners who have made careers out of scavenging garbage and begging at traffic lights, police said. Illegal car washers and vegetable brokers were also hunted down during the simultaneous campaigns in Al-Aiziya and Guwaizah districts in eastern Jeddah. Authorities coordinated the campaigns after receiving reports about hundreds of illegal aliens practicing illegal activities, finding a safe haven in this old and dismantling part of Jeddah. When the authorities busted the two districts, they found them hiding in small dilapidated houses and narrow scary alleys. The Passport Department teams spread into small cells all over the two districts and closed its points of exit and entry to prevent them from escape. It was a successful hunt for authorities, arresting over 115 male and female overstayers, suspected of illegally dealing in dry bread and soft drink cans, washing cars and selling vegetables and fruits of unknown sources. The surprise campaigns also targeted beggars at traffic signals and commercial centers, who have flooded the streets of Jeddah. The campaign also nabbed old African women and several boys whose families used to send them out to the streets to collect soft drink cans and dry bread in return for a measly commission.
