Lighter and safer cooking gas cylinders made of fiberglass will hit the Saudi market next month, according to industry sources. Manufactured in Norway the fiberglass cooking gas cylinders are reportedly 100 percent explosion-proof, rust-proof and as strong as metal cylinders. A filled fiberglass cylinder will weigh 16 kg as opposed to a metal cylinder which weighs 27.4 kg with gas. “Fiberglass cylinders are designed in such a way that they will not explode under any circumstance even in case of accidental gas leak, a major concern for the consumers,” the sources said. Fiberglass cylinders will be transparent so that consumers can check the quantity of the gas. Priced at SR350 it will be available in four different colors – red, blue, green and grey. The price of gas will, however, remain at SR15. The product has already got approval for its specification from the Kingdom's authorizing agencies such as the Civil Department and Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO), the source said. Fiberglass cylinders will be first launched in Riyadh, and within the next four to five months these will be available in other parts of the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia will be the first country in the region to introduce fiberglass cooking gas cylinders, which are already in use in 40 countries across the world. There are around 400 to 500 LPG gas stations in Riyadh alone.
