Thousands of Saudis and expatriates of all ages took part in a charity run on the Jeddah waterfront as part of a campaign to fight smoking, under the banner “Together against smoking and to support cancer patients.” Al-Eman Association for Cancer and the Jeddah Education Department held the event to raise support for cancer patients under the patronage of Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, the Emir of Makkah region. A number of disabled children kicked off the race when they started off on their wheelchairs, while young children ran with colored balloons and banners. The run was between the roundabouts of La Costa and Nawras (Gull) on the waterfront highway. Tawfiq Al-Ghamdi, manager at Al-Eman, said that proceeds from the event would go to the treatment and support of cancer patients. He added that more than 5,000 people from various schools and organizations took part in the run. The Ministry of Social Affairs, Jeddah Police Department officers and Saudi Red Crescent paramedics also took part in the event as the stretch of road the event was held on was cordoned off. Reporters and photographers were carried around on Harley Davidson motorcycles, while trucks carried water to participants. __
