Fighting between government forces and Tamil Tiger separatists across Sri Lanka's embattled north killed 34 rebels and one soldier, the military said Wednesday. In the latest fighting, the military said army troops pushed into rebel-held territory in the Mannar district early Wednesday, triggering a battle that killed 11 guerrillas. Soldiers backed by artillery and mortar fire advanced into the Tamil Tiger territory and attacked rebel positions in two villages, a Defense Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because of government restrictions on speaking to the media.
