Sudais, Imam and Khateeb of the Grand Mosque, has described the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Kaust) as a lofty scientific fort and a giant bastion of scientific knowledge. In his Friday sermon, Sheikh Sudais said the new university in Thuwal, 80 km northwest of Jeddah, would contribute to restoring the past glory of the Islamic Ummah. King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, inaugurated the university on Sept. 23, on the Kingdom's National Day, in the presence of several heads of state, global business leaders, Nobel laureates and celebrated academics. Sheikh Al-Sudais described the establishment of the university as a major cultural and historic achievement. “It is a lofty minaret of science and knowledge and those who love science and knowledge should bless and commend this cultural edifice since it has been created in the service of the Ummah and restoration of its ancient glory,” the imam was quoted by Saudi Press Agency as saying. “Everyone who loves science and knowledge will support this great qualitative development in (education),” Al-Sudais said. He said it was the duty of leaders, scholars, writers, media persons and youths to support this great effort and historic achievement cautioning those who create doubts about the university and its programs. King Abdullah established this university with noble intentions, he said, adding that it would bring happiness not only to the king but to the whole Muslim World. Sheikh Al-Sudais asked the Muslims to beware of the malicious rumors spread by the enemies of the Ummah “who look for any opportunity to drive a wedge between the sons of the nation to satisfy their ulterior motives.” In the face of this nefarious campaign, he said, it becomes inevitable for all segments of the society to remain steadfast and “stay united behind the leader who works day and night for the well-being of the Ummah.” Islam, Sheikh Al-Sudais stressed, is a religion of science, education, guidance and reform.. He appealed to the Ummah to equip itself with knowledge and science and not to lack behind in the march of progress. __
