The Pittsburgh Penguins won 5-4 Thursday to inflict the Philadelphia Flyers' first loss of the new NHL season. Bill Guerin and Alex Goligoski scored midway through the second period to help the Stanley Cup champs recover after their first loss of the season the previous day. The Flyers missed a chance to start a season 4-0 for the first time since 1995-96. Rangers 4, Capitals 3: In Washington, Marian Gaborik scored two goals about 2-1/2 minutes apart in the third period to lift New York over Washington. Washington led 3-2 in the third period before Gaborik tied the game at the 8:09 mark. He then put New York ahead at 10:42 on the power play. Capitals' star Alex Ovechkin entered the game with five goals and four assists in the opening three games, but the two-time NHL MVP was kept in check by New York's Henrik Lundqvist. Flames 4, Oilers 3, SO: In Edmonton, Alberta, Nigel Dawes and Olli Jokinen scored in the shootout to give Calgary its second comeback victory in Edmonton this season. With Edmonton holding a 3-2 lead, Calgary pulled its goalie and scored with 1.5 seconds left in regulation time when Jay Bouwmeester's shot from the point was tipped in by Rene Bourque. Daymond Langkow and Dawes also scored in regulation for the 4-0 Flames, who also beat the Oilers on Saturday. Sharks 6, Blue Jackets 3: In San Jose, California, Dany Heatley scored three goals in his home debut as San Jose downed Columbus. Heatley, acquired last month from Ottawa, scored two goals in the second period and added another on a penalty shot in the third. Dan Boyle added a goal and two assists, and Joe Thornton tied a franchise record with four assists for the Sharks. Thrashers 4, Blues 2: In St. Louis, Ilya Kovalchuk had his second two-goal game of the season as Atlanta spoiled St. Louis' home opener. Kovalchuk scored the go-ahead goal in the first period and added a late empty-netter. Keith Tkachuk had a goal and an assist and topped 400 points with the Blues. Predators 3, Avalanche 2: In Nashville, Tennesee, Patric Hornqvist scored twice 2:17 apart in the third period as Nashville edged Colorado. Hornqvist's first two goals of the season came after officials ruled no goal for Nashville midway through the third on a shot that was trickling toward the line when Jason Arnott's skate pushed it across. Arnott finished with a goal and an assist, and Ryan Suter had two assists in helping Nashville win its third straight home opener. Sabres 2, Coyotes 1: In Buffalo, New York, Thomas Vanek snapped a late third-period tie to lift Buffalo over Phoenix. Senators 3, Islanders 2, OT: In Ottawa, Mike Fisher scored 32 seconds into overtime to give Ottawa the victory over New York. Kings 6, Wild 3: In Los Angeles, Ryan Smyth scored two goals for Los Angeles, which took a three-goal lead over Minnesota in the first period. Ducks 6, Bruins 1: In Boston, Teemu Selanne scored two goals 82 seconds apart in the second period to help Anaheim rout Boston and record its first win of the season. Red Wings 3, Blackhawks 2: In Detroit, Kris Draper and Johan Franzen scored 1:34 apart late in the second period to put Detroit ahead to stay against Chicago. Devils 4, Lightning 3, SO: In Tampa, Florida, Travis Zajac scored with 1 second left in regulation, and New Jersey went on to the shootout win over Tampa Bay.
