Petrovic, Olson share lead on 66 at Turning Stone
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 03 - 10 - 2009

Tim Petrovic and rookie Leif Olson shot six-under-par 66s in dismal conditions Thursday to share the first-round lead at the Turning Stone Championship in Verona, New York, the opener of the US tour's Fall Series.
The 43-year-old Petrovic, who has four top 10 finishes this year, chipped in twice in a round that featured seven birdies and a lone bogey at the Atunyote course.
Olson, 28, who has made only four cuts in 17 starts this season and ranks 214th on the money list, matched his low PGA round with a 66 that also included one bogey.
One stroke off the pace were Australian John Senden and Americans Matt Kuchar and Vaughn Taylor.
The long irons saved Petrovic, who sacrificed distance to concentrate on keeping the ball in the fairway to take advantage of “lift, clean and place” provisions.
Adam Scott, a captain's pick by Greg Norman in the International Team for next week's Presidents Cup, had seven birdies to offset a bogey and double bogey for 68, a score he shared with six others including fellow-Australian Matt Jones.
Playing alongside Scott was fellow Presidents Cup teammate and compatriot Robert Allenby, who finished second in last year's Turning Stone Resort Championship though he struggled with a 77 in Thursday's opening round.
Moodie seizes early lead
In Alabama, Scotland's Janice Moodie made birdie on a half dozen of her final seven holes en route to an eight-under par 64 and a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the LPGA's Navistar Classic.
Just behind Moodie is 14-year-old Alexis Thompson while world No. 1 Lorena Ochoa, France's Karen Icher and American Michelle Wie are two strokes behind Moodie.
The 36-year-old Moodie began at the No. 10 hole and got off to a quick start with a birdie on the 12th. She is a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour.
She parred three in a row around the turn before catching fire, rolling in a 10-foot birdie putt on hole No. 3. She sank another birdie putt on number four, parred the fifth and tapped in for birdie on the sixth.
Moodie sank a 25-footer at the seventh, then got up and down for birdie at No. 8. She closed her round with a four-foot putt for birdie on the ninth.
Ochoa, the defending champion, had three birdies in a bogey-free round, while Wie made birdie on four holes on the back nine.
