The Kingdom's policy of rehabilitation of repentant militants and their assimilation in society's mainstream has come for appreciation by the Human Rights Commission (HRC). In a report issued on the occasion of the Kingdom's National Day, the HRC highlighted the equal status accorded to citizens and residents by the courts in line with the teachings of the Islamic Shariah and the Basic Rule System as well as the regional and international conventions. The report said Article 26 of the Basic Rule System reiterates the commitment of the Kingdom as regards protection of human rights. The HRC applauded government measures against terrorism and said praised authorities for protecting human rights in their anti-terrorism fight. The report reviewed the Kingdom's experience in fighting terrorism and deviant and extremist thought through adopting dialogue and awareness programs. The report also focused on the Kingdom joining several international agreements concerned with fighting terrorism. In 2006, it organized an international conference on fighting terrorism, and called for establishing an international center for combating terrorism. The HRC has drawn attention to the great care given by King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, to the issue of human rights. The Kingdom's efforts in protecting human rights have been appreciated by several international concerned organizations, said the report. The report praised King Abdullah's role for enhancing the pillars of justice and equality and protecting human rights in the Kingdom. The HRC hailed the efforts of the Kingdom to develop the judicial system as well as the system of the municipal councils which aims at broadening the participation of the citizens in the management of the local affairs. It also noted the attention given by the Shoura (Consultative) Council to the problems of human rights. The Commission noted with admiration King Abdullah winning King Faisal international prize in recognition of his efforts in the service of Islam and Muslims throughout the world. The King's role as regards dialogue among followers of religions and to advocate tolerance, peace and cooperation were highly appreciated.
