British World War Two armed forces' sweetheart Vera Lynn made history when she took top spot in the album charts with her songs from 70 years ago, beating off the Beatles, the Official Charts Company said Sunday. Nostalgia was the dominant sentiment in the charts this week, with Lynn sharing the limelight with the Fab Four who had four new entries in the top 10, thanks to the reissue of their remastered back catalogue as individual albums and in box sets. But Lynn, 92, saw off the music icons with her collection “We'll Meet Again - the very best of Vera Lynn”, becoming the oldest living artist to have a number one album. The previous record holder was Bob Dylan, who in his 60s, was number one earlier this year with the album “Together Through Life”. “I am extremely surprised and delighted, and a big ‘thank you' to all my fans for putting me there,” Lynn said in a statement. The Beatles, arguably the most successful band ever, set a record for most albums simultaneously in the top 10 by a group. Bookmaker William Hill had cut the odds on the Beatles having all the top 10 albums to 25/1. But they had to settle for number five with “Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band”; number six with “Abbey Road”, number nine with “Revolver” and number 10 with “Rubber Soul”.
