Worshippers in the village of Jafan were called upon to intervene when the muezzin (caller to prayer) of their local mosque attacked a member of the congregation with a large stick in an apparent loss of control on Saturday. Regulars at the Abu Bakr Al-Siddique Mosque stepped in to prevent serious injury and put the incident down to a long-running dispute between the muezzin and a worshipper. A source at the Ministry of Endowments said the aggressor had been employed as a muezzin for 30 years and had recently been entrusted with the call to prayer at the newly-built mosque. “The muezzin will be returned to the mosque where he was formerly employed,” the source said.
