The top seeds in both the men's and women's events at the New Haven Open lost Thursday as Russian pair Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nikolay Davydenko bowed out with quarterfinal defeats. World No. 6 Kuznetsova was unable to shake off former number one Amelie Mauresmo of France, who staved off five set points in the opener on her way to a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 upset win over the 24-year-old. Matching Mauresmo's big victory was American Sam Querrey, who overpowered Davydenko in a dramatic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 triumph. Querrey will try to keep his hot streak going in the semifinals against Argentina's Jose Acasuso, who defeated Florent Serra 7-5, 6-4. Igor Andreev outlasted Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 and will play Fernando Verdasco in the other semifinal after the second seed beat Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-1. On the women's side, Caroline Wozniacki dispatched Virginie Razzano 6-4, 6-3 and will meet Flavia Pennetta, who beat Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2, 6-2. Elena Vesnina defeated fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze 6-1, 7-5 to set up a showdown against Mauresmo Friday. US Open draw World No. 1 Roger Federer will begin his bid to win a record sixth consecutive US Open against American wildcard Devin Britton after the draw was made Thursday. “I'm still motivated,” Federer said. “I'm still excited about playing.” The Swiss, who won the French Open and Wimbledon titles this year to set a record of 15 Grand Slam singles victories, is scheduled to play fourth seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the semifinals. Women's champion Serena Williams begins her campaign against American wildcard Alexa Glatch. Second seed Andy Murray, runner-up last year and chasing his first Grand Slam crown, could face third seed Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. Scot Murray will begin against Latvian Ernests Gulbis while Spaniard Nadal, who missed Wimbledon because of tendinitis in his knees, takes on Frenchman Richard Gasquet in one of the highlights of round one. Fourth seed Djokovic will play Croatian Ivan Ljubicic and former champion Andy Roddick, the leading American seed at number five, takes on Bjorn Phau of Germany in round one. Djokovic and Roddick are seeded to face each other in the quarterfinals. In the women's event, Serena is seeded two behind world No. 1 Dinara Safina and could face her sister Venus, the third seed, in the semifinals. Russian Safina, still chasing her first Grand Slam title, plays Australian wildcard Olivia Rogowska in the opening round while Venus takes on another Russian Vera Dushevina.
